Melchizedek is one of the most mysterious individuals in Scripture. Genesis 14:18 identifies him as the king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. He blessed Abraham, and Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoils.
Hebrews 7:3 describes him as having no recorded genealogy, beginning of days, or end of life, but being “made like unto the Son of God.” Notice that Scripture says he was made like the Son of God, not that he actually was Jesus Christ.
Think of Melchizedek as a signpost pointing toward something far greater. The signpost is important, but the destination is what really matters. Melchizedek's priesthood points us to the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ.
Unlike earthly priests who eventually die, Jesus lives forever. Hebrews 7:25 tells us that He is “able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
Scripture doesn't tell us everything about Melchizedek, and we shouldn't fill those gaps with speculation. The real message of Hebrews 7 is not the mystery surrounding Melchizedek, but the greatness of Jesus Christ.
Melchizedek points us to the Savior, but only Jesus Christ can save us.
