No complaining

Not complaining is part of a believers calling.

Philippians 2:14-15
King James Version
14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

How are we doing with this?

I started working on this about two or three years ago. It's difficult. The world loves for women especially to paint themselves as victims.

I've had the best results in not complaining out loud when making a frequent gratitude practice. I see thankfulness as the opposite of complaining.

I still am tempted often to grumble to myself. But I hope to show God my love and gratitude by doing my tasks with a good attitude that reflects His goodness toward me. I don’t spend time in a lot of Mom spaces online because of the frequent complaints about husbands and motherhood. The reality is, having a loving Godly husband and beautiful healthy children are tremendous blessings that I frankly do not deserve.

In remembering the goodness of the Lord and His mercy toward me, I am often moved to tears. This is how I want to be. I want to be full of thanks and joy.

I know what you mean. As a man, I’ve struggled with this too, and I’ve been working on it. It’s harder than it sounds.

What you said about thankfulness really stood out to me. I’ve noticed the same thing, when I’m actually focused on what God has given me, the complaining doesn’t seem to have as much room. I still catch myself sometimes, even if it’s just in my thoughts. But like you said, remembering how good the Lord has been starts to shift things.

This is something I have to work on too, and it’s not easy.

There's levels to this, it seems. When Scripture hits us with the command, we begin to see ourselves like how in James 1 it says Scripture is like a man beholding himself in a mirror. It's often ugly at first. We see our sin.

Then we begin to work on the outward action of complaining out loud. Then eventually, we don't even want it in our thoughts and attitudes.

I cannot stress enough that just trying not to complain won't cut it. I definitely failed a couple times yesterday.

It's in filling our minds with thanks, praise and everything good (Phillipians 4:6-8). I am naturally an anxious and fretful person. Only in focusing on God's goodness am I not this way.
