One of the most common assumptions people bring to Matthew 5 is that Jesus is intensifying the Law to make it harder so people will give up. Scripture says the opposite. The Law was never weak. Man was. Jesus does not correct Moses. He exposes the human heart that hides behind technical obedience. When He says that lust is adultery of the heart and hatred is murder in seed form, He is showing that sin is not just an action problem but a nature problem. Scripture already taught this. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” ~Jeremiah 17:9. Jesus brings that truth into the open. That is why He ends the section with “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” ~Matthew 5:48. This is not a ladder to climb. It is a mirror that shuts every mouth and drives sinners to grace. If righteousness does not exceed the scribes and Pharisees, no one enters the kingdom ~Matthew 5:20. That excess is not better rule keeping but a changed heart.

If Jesus exposes heart sin rather than just outward acts, what hope does a sinner have apart from being made new?
