Can someone please tell me if the lake of fire in the book of revelation is an actual place where Jesus would send the lost to or just a symbol for the grave which the lost would be put into when Jesus comes back?

That is a serious question, and the answer needs to come from the text itself, not from what we would rather it mean.

Revelation does not describe the lake of fire as merely the grave. In fact, Revelation 20:14 says, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” If death and hell are cast into the lake of fire, then the lake of fire cannot simply be the grave. It is something beyond death and the grave. It is the final judgment.

Revelation 20:15 also says, “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” That is not just saying people die and are buried. The dead have already been raised and judged before this happens. Revelation 20:12 says, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God.” So this is after resurrection and judgment, not merely a description of burial.

Jesus also spoke this way. In Matthew 25:41 He says, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” Then in Matthew 25:46 He says, “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” The same verse that speaks of eternal life also speaks of everlasting punishment. That is hard language, but it is what the Lord said.

The book of Revelation does use symbols, but symbols still point to real things. The beast is symbolic language, but it represents real opposition to God. The dragon is symbolic language, but Revelation 12:9 tells us the dragon is Satan. So even if someone argues over the imagery of fire, the judgment itself is real. The lake of fire is not presented as a harmless picture of the grave. It is called “the second death” and is connected with final judgment.

Also notice Revelation 19:20 says the beast and false prophet are cast into the lake of fire before the thousand years. Then Revelation 20:10 says the devil is cast into the lake of fire “where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” That does not sound like the grave. That is conscious judgment.

So my answer would be this: the lake of fire is the final place of judgment for Satan, the beast, the false prophet, and all whose names are not written in the book of life. The Bible does not give us permission to reduce it to the grave. Whatever details we may not fully understand, Scripture is clear that it is real, final, and terrible.

That is also why the gospel matters so much. Jesus did not come just to improve our lives. He came to save sinners from the wrath to come. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).

There are other Scriptures that show you that you can not to turn the lake of fire into nothing more than the grave. Revelation 21:8 says the lost “shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Revelation 14:11 says, “the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night.” That is not the language of a normal burial.

Jesus also said in Matthew 25:41, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” Then in Matthew 25:46 He said, “these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” The same Lord who promised eternal life also warned of everlasting punishment.

John 5:28-29 also shows why this cannot simply mean the grave. Jesus said those in the graves will come forth, some “unto the resurrection of life,” and some “unto the resurrection of damnation.” So the wicked are raised from the grave before final judgment. That means final judgment cannot simply be the grave itself.

Daniel 12:2 says the same kind of thing: “some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Mark 9:43-48 speaks of “the fire that never shall be quenched” and says, “where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” These are sober warnings from Scripture.

So while Revelation uses symbolic language in places, the judgment itself is not symbolic in the sense of being unreal. The lake of fire is the final judgment of God, called “the second death,” and Scripture does not give us permission to reduce it to the grave.
