Jesus warned, “Take heed that no man deceive you.” (Matthew 24:4)
That warning is for everyone who claims to follow Jesus Christ, everyone who preaches or teaches in His name, and everyone searching for salvation. And it includes YOU and ME!
Do not think for one moment that because someone carries a Bible, preaches about Jesus, has a large following, or sounds convincing, they are teaching the truth. Satan himself can appear as an angel of light, and his ministers can disguise themselves as ministers of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).
A LIE DOES NOT BECOME TRUTH BECAUSE A PREACHER SAYS IT, AND FALSE TEACHING DOES NOT BECOME SOUND DOCTRINE BECAUSE A CHURCH BELIEVES IT!
But here is something even more frightening. You can deceive yourself!
Jesus warned in Matthew 7:21-23 that many will call Him Lord, claim to have done wonderful works in His name, and still hear those terrifying words: “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
These people were convinced they belonged to Christ, but they were wrong! Think about that before you assume your profession of faith, church membership, baptism, religious works, or years of believing something prove you are saved.
Are you following the Jesus Christ revealed in Scripture, or a Jesus someone has taught you to believe in? Are you trusting the true gospel, or a counterfeit?
Paul warned that anyone preaching another gospel is accursed (Galatians 1:8-9). Salvation is by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our works (Ephesians 2:8-9). And true faith is not an excuse to continue living in sin (1 John 3:6-10).
The Bereans searched the Scriptures daily to see whether even Paul's teaching was true (Acts 17:11). Yet many today will defend their favorite preacher or religious beliefs without ever examining them against God's Word.
STOP TRUSTING MEN MORE THAN SCRIPTURE! STOP DEFENDING WHAT GOD'S WORD EXPOSES AS FALSE!
And remember, this warning applies to the person giving it just as much as the person reading it.
“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
If Scripture exposes something you believe as false, humble yourself and receive the truth. Do not harden your heart just because the truth challenges what you have always believed.
“To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15)
One day you will stand before Jesus Christ. Your pastor will not answer for you. Your church will not answer for you. And your excuses will not change what God has said.
WAKE UP! EXAMINE YOUR FAITH! REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME!
“Let no man deceive you.” (Ephesians 5:6)
And never forget, the person deceiving you might be the very person staring back at you in the mirror.
