Your Religion Is Serving the Wrong God Matthew 6:1–24 is Jesus ripping the mask off religious performance and revealing who people are really living for. He does not speak against pagans. He addresses the devout. He begins with a warning that cuts to the motive level. “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven” ~Matthew 6:1. The problem is not giving. The problem is the why. God is not moved by visible obedience if the heart is thirsting for applause.

Question: Who are you really serving?
This verse

"Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven "

is quite heavy for me ... the more I look into the meaning of such verses, the better I am getting at understanding Scripture, and discovering answers to my life's dilemmas too : )

Thank you for the link in your post ... a very good read!

This speaks volumes for me right now: "The Father sees in secret. He rewards truth, not display. He provides for those who seek His kingdom first ~Matthew 6:33. That promise is not for pretenders. It is for those who have abandoned self rule.
(and is a follow up from a recent comment that I made on "falsehood" and "denial" in marriage ... God speaks to me through these posts, it is so Gooood : )

After reading the whole thread, there is a situation between one Church that practices SDA. They couldn't afford the rent of their facility so in 2024 they attempted to woo the pastor of a second Church and it's property to merge with them. The second Church is the Church of God.

After getting turned down by the second Church's committee the SDA Church managed to get a time slot on Saturdays at the second Church in December 2025.

Being granted use of the same building by the Church of God? The SDA Church immediately started using the second Church's address in all it's letterhead, email, etc...

Ok, perhaps in time the SDA Church will come to it's senses and convert to True Christianity and Core statement. Therefore, I should just mind my own business. But this just doesn't sink in.

The SDA pastor then sent me an email invite in December and this month to attend a Pastor's luncheon. They didn't have any particular agenda and topic to discuss, just share their testimony and needs in leading the church and what God is doing overall.

I replied back in my email, thanked the SDA pastor and politely declined. In the past I would have addressed the party(s,) - What is the Truth, and who people are really living for?

I was led to go to a mentor pastor for prayer and guidance whether I should act or not.

I'm sharing this with you for this reason. The Christian faith tends to hush hush over such things but I don't believe this is what Jesus teaches. His examples to expose people's motives is not to condemn but to warn against practices that takes God's glory away in any instance.

In Prayer,

Bob

Bob, I appreciate the honesty of what you shared. You are not dealing in gossip or curiosity. You are weighing motive, truth, and God’s glory. Scripture treats that as a serious matter, and so should we.

From Genesis to Revelation, the line God keeps drawing is obedience. Not perfection, not appearance, not religious activity, but submission to His word. Jesus never teaches us to ignore truth for the sake of surface peace, and He never authorizes reaction driven by suspicion or irritation. Scripture holds both guardrails firmly in place.

When Jesus explains why He speaks in parables, He says the issue is not access to truth but response to it. Some hear and turn. Others hear and resist. “Seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, neither do they understand” ~Matthew 13:13. Their senses work, but their wills refuse. Obedience is what opens understanding. Resistance brings dullness. That is why Jesus says blessed are those who see and hear, because they respond to what God has shown them ~Matthew 13:16.

That same principle governs the Old Testament. Saul heard God clearly in 1 Samuel 15. There was no ambiguity in the command. Saul obeyed partially, justified himself religiously, and declared success anyway. Samuel’s response exposes the heart of the matter. “To obey is better than sacrifice” ~1 Samuel 15:22. Saul wanted to keep appearances, satisfy people, and still claim obedience. God rejected that outright. Partial obedience dressed up as devotion is still disobedience.

Exodus 32 presses the same truth. Israel does not abandon religion. They keep sacrifices. They even attach the LORD’s name to their actions. “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD” ~Exodus 32:5. But God says they have corrupted themselves and turned aside from the way He commanded ~Exodus 32:7–8. Religious language did not excuse disobedience. When Moses asks, “Who is on the LORD’s side?” the answer is not verbal. It is obedience in action ~Exodus 32:26.

Jesus brings this to a sharp point in the New Testament. “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” ~Luke 6:46. And again, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father” ~Matthew 7:21. Scripture does not blur this line. Obedience is not optional. It is the evidence of faith.

That is why your response matters. You did not rush to accuse. You prayed. You sought counsel. Scripture commends that posture. “In the multitude of counsellors there is safety” ~Proverbs 11:14. Declining the luncheon was not fear. It was discernment. You were not invited to contend for truth. You were invited to share space without purpose. Wisdom says do not lend presence where it implies endorsement. “Abstain from all appearance of evil” ~1 Thessalonians 5:22 speaks directly to that concern.

Jesus Himself did not chase every questionable situation. He spoke when God’s truth or glory was being redirected. He also withdrew when confrontation would have been premature. “My time is not yet come” ~John 7:6 shows that restraint is not compromise. Silence can be obedience when truth is not yet being challenged.

At the same time, Scripture never excuses compromise. “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump” ~Galatians 5:9 is a warning about spiritual mixture, not administrative convenience. When falsehood is taught, silence is not love. When no doctrine is being pressed on you, watchfulness can be wisdom.

You are right that Jesus exposed motives not to condemn, but to warn. The entire Bible points in that direction. God wants hearts that submit, not mouths that perform. “If ye love me, keep my commandments” ~John 14:15 remains the test.

You are not called to fix everything you can see. You are called to walk in obedience where God has placed you. Keep your conscience clear. Keep your distance where needed. Keep your mouth ready if truth is challenged directly. God sees what men do with platforms, addresses, and appearances. “The Father seeth in secret” ~Matthew 6:4 still stands.

Obedience, without compromise, is what Scripture has always demanded. You are right to take it seriously.
