Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
John 12:24
How do we apply this verse to our lives?
We apply ~John 12:24 by first seeing Christ in it, then following the pattern He gives.
Jesus is saying that His death would bring life to many. Just as a seed must go into the ground and die before it brings a harvest, Christ had to die so sinners could be saved. So the first application is this: trust fully in His death and resurrection, not yourself. Salvation comes from His finished work, not our effort. “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” ~1 Corinthians 15:3-4.
Then we apply it personally by dying to self. That means we stop living as though our will, comfort, pride, reputation, sins, and desires are Lord over us. Jesus explains the application in the very next verse: “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal” ~John 12:25.
So, plainly stated, we apply this verse by surrendering our lives to Christ. We let the old self-rule die so Christ’s life is seen in us. Paul said, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” ~Galatians 2:20.
In daily life, that means when pride wants to answer sharply, we deny it. When sin tempts us, we refuse it. When comfort tries to keep us from obedience, we follow Christ anyway. When the world offers applause, we choose faithfulness to God instead. When our flesh wants control, we yield to the Lord.
The point is not that we save ourselves by dying to self. The point is that those who have been saved by Christ’s death now follow Him in a life of surrender. A seed kept safe in the hand remains alone. A life kept for self remains fruitless. But a life surrendered to Christ bears fruit for God.
That is how we apply it: trust Christ’s death for salvation, then die daily to self so His life bears fruit through us.
