Revelation's Message to the Seven Churches

Wouldn't it be nice if God sent a Prophet to give an exhortation to our Churches in these times and charge us where we need to repent with correction?

In Revelation One John is given a vision by God to address the Churches in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. In Revelation Two and Three John's message is from Jesus; He gives praise to six of the churches except for one, and five are given direct rebuke (sharp criticism,) except for two.

Ephesus abandoned their first Love.
Pergamum held to the teaching of Balaam, sacrificed food to idols and practiced sexual immorality.
Thyatira worshiped the seduction of Jezebel and sacrificed food to idols.
Sardis worshiped the mother goddess Cybele and enjoyed soft, easy living and luxury, all leading to spiritually dead.
Laodicea was neither hot or cold, but lukewarm (whose side are you on?) causing Jesus to vomit them out of His mouth.

Smyrna was not rebuked by Jesus but was vulnerable to the manipulating and demanding worship by the Roman empire.
Philadelphia was not rebuked by Jesus but was persecuted by Jewish (those who were non believers of Jesus) in the synagogues.

For each Church Jesus addresses are varying examples of our Churches today. Christ rebukes and instructs us because our sins and weaknesses and can mislead us to
deceptive, false teaching, thus changing our daily walk to a minimum relationship with God, and in some cases non-existence.

Jesus lovingly gives the seven Churches blessings of two lessons;
An invitation to “Those who have an ear to hear let them hear” (7 times in Revelation, 3 times each in Matthew and Mark and 2 times in Luke.)

The other lesson are
His Promises.

Ephesus
- The tree of life. A restoration and eternal life.
Smyrna - Those who overcome the threat of persecution.
Pergamum – Hidden manna and a white stone. Those who overcome the threat of false teaching and the believer’s new name, the intimate relationship with God.
Thyatira - Overcome sexual immorality and idolatrous influences and keep Jesus’ works until the end.
Sardis – Those who overcome will be clothed in white garments and their names and evil will be blotted out in the Book of Life into a heavenly citizenship.
Philadelphia – They will be pillars in the temple of My God. Pillars are strength in foundation, stability and dignified beauty in the eyes of God.
Laodicea – They will overcome lukewarmness which to me stands out compromising Jesus, overcoming the battle of indifference and sit with Him on His throne.

To encourage all Christians who study Revelation. This is not an easy read. It is filled with a mix of literal, figurative, metaphorical and allegorical interpretations starting with chapter one through twenty-two. It's important to pray, leading us to learn from seasoned Bible teachers or preachers. It all comes down to this;

John introduced his reason for writing a direct command from Jesus Christ, that is, Jesus is returning (His Second Coming), "yes, I am coming soon" reference Revelation 22:20.

God bless you all.

Yes, this is such a strong word, but such a needed one too. The good news is that we really don’t have to question whether or not God will ever send another special messenger to purge the churches. He has, through His Word, already spoken. His message to those seven churches of long ago is still valid today. The Book of Revelation is not just history, it’s a mirror. Jesus is still walking among His lampstands ~Revelation 1: 13 and He is still viewing the condition of His church. Every word of warning and promise was then so it still is now for His Word is living and active ~Hebrews 4:12.

God does not need to reveal anything new to the church today. The church needs, instead, to turn back to faithful obedience of the revelation already given. We have turned from our first love, tolerated false teaching and grown comfortable in our compromise, just as those ancient congregations did. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches,” is still the Holy Spirit’s message to us today. These messages are not just for history books, they are still speaking to our day.

Christ rebukes because He loves. His desire is to restore, not to destroy. If we humble ourselves, repent, and return to a simple devotion to Him, He will clean, revive and use His church once again ~2 Chronicles 7:14. The greatest exhortation we could read today is the same one that Jesus has already spoken: “Be zealous therefore, and repent.” ~Revelation 3:19. He has not gone silent, we are the ones we have to wonder if we are still listening.
