Sir, my question is according to the Prophecy given by Malachi in Malachi 4 vs 5 and 6

Malachi 4:5-6
[5]Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
[6]And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

My question is this. Will Elijah come back in this last day before the day of Judgement. What does the verse really say.

I am asking because many bible scholars predicted that Elijah will literally come back to this earth to cause a revival, which is to turn the heart of the Fathers to their children and the heart of their children to their Fathers.

Are they correct? What is your response.

I read an article that The Jews have been waiting centuries for the return of Elijah and have prepared a special place for him.

But God does not leave us guessing. When the angel announced John the Baptist’s birth, he said John would go “before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” ~ Luke 1:17. That is Malachi’s language showing up again. Same mission. Same assignment.

Then Jesus removes all doubt. In Matthew 11:14 He says, “This is Elias, which was for to come.” Later in Matthew 17:12–13, He says Elijah “is come already,” and the disciples understood He was speaking about John the Baptist.

Now that settles the prophecy. Scripture interprets Scripture. John was not Elijah reincarnated. He even said in John 1:21, “I am not.” But he came carrying Elijah’s mantle. Same boldness. Same call to repentance. Same confrontation of a rebellious generation.

Here is the danger. When we ignore how Jesus explained the prophecy, we start building theories. And theories can sound exciting. But excitement is not authority. The Word is authority.

If God wanted us to expect Elijah’s literal return before judgment, He would have said so clearly. Instead, He shows us fulfillment in John and centers the focus on Christ. So we do not chase speculation. Stand on revelation.

The point of Malachi was not to create mystery. It was to prepare hearts for the Lord. And that preparation came through John, pointing straight to Jesus.

Hello Phil and David;

In my discipleship (study) of the Bible I wrestle often with a passage and will conclude with Scripture aligning with a foretelling of God’s providence, applicable teaching and careful prophecy.

It addresses the challenge of a passage, and double challenges in a cross reference of Bible verses.

Speaking for myself, I feel asking questions is always good, but arriving at “I don’t believe a certain passage” or “it doesn’t reference that passage” is dismissive. Are we directing this at God, at a fellow disciple, a commentator, scholar or Biblical text author?

Perhaps this requires me to dig deeper in my study, re-read the passage and its context. God will reveal and make it plain.

Again, this is on me.

Both passages Malachi 4:5-6 and Luke 1:17 do align with each other, Malachi prophesied correctly that John the Baptist, the Elias or Elijah would proclaim the Way of the Lord. Both would point to the context emphasizing reconciliation of men, women, parents, children all returning to Christ in obedience.

When we eliminate all the word stuff, presupposition’s, God’s Word is straight up.

Yes but Matt11:13 says;" For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John." But they spoke of Elijah and not John.
And again Matt11:14- "And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come."(NIV). "If you are willing to accept it he is Elijah", has the implied statement if you are not willing to accept it, he is for you not Elijah.
It's like me telling you, "the greatest boxer lived in the 20th century and if you are willing to believe me it was Mohamad Ali". You may believe it was some one else, so for you it would be false in the same way the Jews may have thought about John.
And why say "he is the Elijah"? How many other Elijahs are there?

Then again, “Elias is come already… Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist” ~Matthew 17:12-13. That settles the matter. We do not look for something beyond what Christ has already defined.

But the tenses seem all wrong to me in Matt 17:11-13!
Matt17:11 "Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things." Will is the future tense. What will Elijah do? It's now the transfiguration and I believe JtB is dead by now.
17:13 "Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist." Leaving open the question did they understand correctly.
The disciples may well be wondering why John the Baptist comes into the conversation when they had just seen the "real" Elijah. Why did God give us an Elijah lite instead the real McCoy who seems to have been on hand?

And finally (maybe) why would John fulfill the Elijah prophecy when he claimed not to be Elijah.(Jn 1:21)

I agree that Elijah will not “personally” return before Jesus Christ’s second coming, and that John the Baptist came in the spirit of Elijah to pave the way for Jesus’ at His first coming. However, we can expect another Prophet in the spirit of Elijah to pave the way for Christ’s second coming. Malachi 4:5-6 is clear that the Prophet in the spirit of Elijah will come just before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. We can see the great and dreadful day of the Lord described in the book of Revelation. This event hasn’t yet happened, but it looks like we’re on the cusp of entering that period.

“Duality in Bible Prophecy”

Such dual themes are common in Bible prophecy. Jesus specifically alluded to the dual application of some prophecies in Matthew 17:11-12. Asked about the prophecy of "Elijah," who would precede the coming of the Messiah (Malachi 4:5), Jesus responded: "Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already …" (Matthew 17:11-12).

The disciples understood that the "Elijah" who had come already was John the Baptist (verse 13). Jesus Himself explained that John, already dead when Christ uttered these words, was a first fulfillment of Malachi's prophecy.

But Christ's clear implication is that another Elijah will precede His second coming, announcing His return just as John the Baptist preceded Christ's first coming. John no longer could do anything in the future. But as a forerunner, John had fulfilled, at least in part, Malachi's prophecy.

However, we can expect another Prophet in the spirit of Elijah to pave the way for Christ’s second coming. Malachi 4:5-6 is clear that the Prophet in the spirit of Elijah will come just before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. We can see the great and dreadful day of the Lord described in the book of Revelation.

In 1844 and 1914 the world didn’t have the capacity to destroy all life on earth with nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. Or to create a godlike artificial intelligence system vastly superior to humans that could replace humans as the dominant species on the planet. I’m not sure you’re aware that the big tech billionaires are in a mad race to build what’s called artificial general intelligence (AGI) or artificial super-intelligence (ASI). I believe we’re on the cusp of man creating this godlike AI and that this is what was warned about by the Prophet Daniel in Daniel 12:1 and by Jesus Christ in Matthew 24:21-22.

I’m aware that there are Jews in Israel prepared to reestablish the Temple and animal sacrifices. I’m not sure, however, whether the Temple needs be actually rebuilt for Christ to return. Revelation 11:1 is too vague to be interpreted as a necessary prerequisite for Christ’s return.

Umm what other events can we expect before the second coming?

Right now it’s obvious to me that God is in the process of restoring the Kingdom to Israel to the boundaries He gave them in ancient times. How long this will take by our standard of reckoning time is hard to say. Before Jesus was taken to heaven, the Apostles wanted to know if He was going to restore the Kingdom to Israel at that time, but Jesus’ response was it was not for them to time or date that the Father has set for this to occur. Acts 1:6-7. Zechariah 12 shows that God will intervene to protect Israel from its enemies, and will send Jesus to move the Jews to repentance. An excellent video to watch about the miraculous rebirth of modern day Israel in 1948 is “The Coming Convergence - The Tribulation May Begin” at the link below. And 2 Thessalonians 2:4 describes a man exalting himself as God, not a machine replacing humanity. The issue is still pride and deception, not technology becoming divine.

I think you’re seriously wrong on this. The Scriptures do point to a new and powerful god on the world stage. Daniel 11:36-39. This new god is powerful enough to conquer territory and can be bolstered with great wealth. The big tech billionaires are certainly spending huge amounts of money on AI data centers and on politicians to stop safety regulations that will hinder them. The US military and intelligence agencies are using AI for warfare and mass surveillance.

In respect to A I ... we do not know the "1/2 of it" and when it's grip tightens to throttling, perhaps then ordinary man will see what is going on?
Therefore we must turn to Scripture, stay in it, and stay focussed on where we want to be.

I think as we face the end times we should pay close attention to what God the Father says in Amos 5:18-20. Jesus warns us to be ready and be prepared in Matthew 24:36-44. And, in 2 Timothy 3:1, Paul warns that the end times will be perilous.

I’m hoping that Senator Sanders can slow things down so we can better prepare ourselves. This will give us time for more people to be saved. The “great tribulation” described in Revelation 7:9-17 shows us a great multitude of believers are eventually successful in achieving salvation. It’s my belief that during the great tribulation believers will not only learn how to put God’s Law and Christ’s teachings into practice in their lives, they also learn how to use this Godly knowledge and wisdom to properly program and train AI and robots to benefit all of humanity not just a few billionaires. Isaiah 2:1-4 suggests we will turn modern day weaponry - which utilizes AI and robotics - into peaceful uses.
