When Chains Break and Hearts Open: The Night the Gospel Shook a Prison

… and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened. ~ Acts 16:26

Paul and Silas were on their way to prayer when a slave girl, possessed by a spirit of divination, began to shout the truth about them: “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation” (Acts 16:17). Her owners cared nothing for truth, only for profit, so when Paul commanded the spirit to leave her in the name of Jesus Christ, their income vanished. In rage, they dragged the apostles before the authorities, stirred up a mob, and had them beaten and locked in the innermost cell, their feet fastened in stocks.

But that dark cell became a sanctuary. Near midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God, and the other prisoners listened. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Suddenly, the Lord shook the earth. Every door flew open, every chain fell off. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). The jailer, thinking the prisoners had escaped, drew his sword to kill himself, but Paul cried out, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here” (Acts 16:28).

In that moment, the jailer dropped his sword and asked the greatest question anyone can ask: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). And the answer was as clear then as it is now: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved” (Acts 16:31). Not “work harder,” not “try to fix your life,” but believe. “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

That same night, the jailer and his entire household heard the gospel, believed, and were baptized without delay. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16). He went from a hopeless man about to end his life to rejoicing in Christ with his whole family. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Paul and Silas were released publicly the next day, but the greater release had already happened. A man once bound by fear, duty, and darkness was now free in the light of Christ. This is what Jesus came to do: “To preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18). That same gospel still breaks chains today.

If you feel bound, by sin, shame, addiction, or fear, hear the jailer’s question and receive the same answer. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). He is the only way to eternal life (John 14:6), and He is calling you today.

You can be free. You can have peace with God. You can rejoice, just like that jailer, because Jesus saves.
