Most people assume they’re fine because they’re around truth. They hear it, agree with it, and sit comfortably near it. But Scripture presses a harder question that cuts through all of that: are you actually in the faith, or just close to it?
Paul says plainly, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves” ~2 Corinthians 13:5. That is not written to outsiders. That is written to people inside the church. People who have heard the truth. People who think they belong. And yet, the command is still there: test it.
Because being near truth is not the same as being changed by it.
Hebrews warns about this kind of person. “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation” ~Hebrews 2:3. Not reject it with open hatred. Neglect it. Hear it. Understand it. And still not bow to Christ. That is where the danger lies. Not ignorance, but exposure without surrender.
There are people who know the gospel clearly. They understand that Jesus Christ died for sins and rose again. They can explain it. They may even defend it. But their life has not been transformed. Scripture does not give comfort to that. It warns them.
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” ~2 Corinthians 5:17. That is the standard. Not perfection, but transformation. Something real has changed.
You don’t look back to a moment to prove salvation. You look at your life now.
Is there repentance toward sin, or are you still comfortable in it? Scripture says, “God now commandeth all men every where to repent” ~Acts 17:30. A true believer does not make peace with sin. He fights it. He grieves it.
Is there a love for what is right? Not just outward behavior, but inward desire. Jesus said, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” ~Matthew 5:6. That hunger is evidence of life.
Is there submission to Christ as Lord? Not just words, but reality. Jesus said, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” ~Luke 6:46. True faith bows, even when it costs.
Is there obedience to the Word? Not perfect, but real. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” ~James 1:22.
Is there love for God and His people? “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren” ~1 John 3:14.
These are not extras. These are evidences.
And here is the part most people ignore. The closer someone gets to the truth without surrendering, the more dangerous their position becomes. Scripture says that if someone continues in willful sin after knowing the truth, “there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment” ~Hebrews 10:26-27.
That is not talking about the world. That is talking about people who heard and stayed the same.
So the issue is not whether you’ve been around truth. The issue is whether truth has changed you.
Paul’s question still stands, and it is as direct now as it was then: examine yourself.
Because being near the truth will not save you.
Only Christ will.
