Ten Shekels And A Shirt is one of my favorite sermons. See what you think of it. Many profess Christ because they want relief, peace, purpose, or heaven. This sermon confronts a terrifying possibility. A man can want salvation and still not want God.

From Judges 17, religion becomes a tool. A priest is hired. Worship is arranged. God is kept, but only as long as He serves the worshiper. Reidhead presses the issue that modern Christianity often does the same. Christ is presented as the answer to man’s problems instead of man being confronted with God’s glory.

Scripture says eternal life is not merely rescue from hell. It is this: “that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” ~John 17:3. The sinner’s greatest need is reconciliation to God Himself, not the benefits that come from Him.

So the question is not simply, Did you pray, Did you decide, Did you receive help?

The question is: Were you brought to God?

Discussion question:
Can a person truly be converted if Christ is desired mainly for what He gives rather than for who He is?

Sometimes people only relate to God as a concept. But He is a personal Being we can speak to. Do we care about what grieves Him? Or do we only care about what we can get from Him?

I hope we can be renewed in our pursuit of the living God, knowing that He is glorious and personal.

When God warns you, don’t brush it off. Answer Him while you still can, because a hardened heart doesn’t stay neutral, it moves toward judgment. Scripture is clear: “Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts” ~Hebrews 3:15, and again, “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy” ~Proverbs 29:1.
We must be careful not to cater to people's carnal desires, but rather point them to God.
Our danger is to water down God’s word to suit ourselves. God never fits His word to suit me; He fits me to suit His word.
